From EV battery swapping and medical devices to advanced battery manufacturing, a recent visit from REACT showcased the breadth of innovation happening across MSIP – and the growing community behind it.
REACT is the UK’s first cross-institution research centre for sustainable electronics, led by the University of Glasgow in collaboration with the University of Edinburgh, Heriot-Watt University and the Compound Semiconductor Applications (CSA) Catapult.
With REACT focused on helping industry move towards more sustainable and circular electronics, their visit provided a great opportunity to explore the technologies, facilities and manufacturing expertise already found across MSIP.
Innovation in action
The day began in our Innovation Labs, where the team met 4SB Mobility, one of our Lab users.
4SB is developing an innovative approach to EV charging for commercial fleets using swappable batteries. Cormac Cunningham Bell, Lead Design Engineer at 4SB, demonstrated the company’s EV battery swapping equipment and shared more about the engineering and technology behind the system.
From there, the group visited MSIP tenant Vascular Flow Technologies for a tour of its facility.
Vascular Flow is a medical device development company specialising in cardiovascular technologies and its patented Spiral Laminar Flow™ technology. From its manufacturing and R&D facility at MSIP, the company combines product development with specialist medical device manufacturing capabilities.
The morning offered a snapshot of something we want to see more of at MSIP: innovative businesses developing technologies, accessing the facilities they need and growing alongside a community of like-minded companies.
A community built around innovation
Back at the Innovation Hub, lunch was provided by another member of our tenant community, Tutto Fresco, who operate the café at the heart of the Hub.
Over lunch, REACT shared more about its work and current projects, creating an opportunity for conversations around sustainable technology, research and the challenges facing industry.
It’s this exchange of ideas that is central to what we’re building at MSIP.
Our ambition goes beyond providing businesses with somewhere to locate. We’re creating a connected innovation-to-manufacturing ecosystem where companies can access flexible space, Innovation Labs, manufacturing expertise, business support and low-carbon infrastructure – while being surrounded by other ambitious businesses.
From innovation to manufacturing
The visit finished with MEP Technologies, MSIP’s first tenant.
MEP specialises in the design and manufacture of custom battery systems, supporting customers from product design and prototyping through to testing and manufacture.
A tour of its facility and manufacturing processes was a fitting way to end the day – and a great demonstration of the advanced manufacturing capability that exists here at MSIP.
In just one visit, REACT experienced businesses working across EV technology, medical devices and battery manufacturing, alongside the shared facilities and spaces that connect our community.
