We recently joined the University of Dundee School of Business and Dundee & Angus Chamber of Commerce to inspire the next generation of business leaders and show why Dundee is a city with global impact.
Our Innovation Director, Gill Simpson, spoke alongside Ian Houston, an international advocate for trade, diplomacy and university partnerships, at a session titled Careers in Global Trade: Promoting Dundee Internationally.
The event focused on career pathways, sustainability and how Dundee and Scotland connect to global markets.
A city with momentum
Gill’s talk centred on a simple message: Dundee is not defined by what it was, but by what it is building now.
She described Dundee as a city with confidence, creativity and momentum. A place where international ambition sits alongside strong local roots. When those qualities come together, cities do more than talk about innovation. They deliver it.
Gill highlighted MSIP as a practical example of this approach in action. As Scotland’s Innovation Parc, we support businesses, innovators and manufacturers to grow, collaborate and address global challenges such as decarbonisation and sustainable manufacturing.
What matters most is not just the site, but the people, ideas and partnerships developing here.
Proof, not theory

Gill shared how many of the most interesting careers emerging in Dundee connect to global markets without losing a sense of place. You do not need to have your career fully mapped out from day one. Curiosity, adaptability and collaboration matter more.
This message resonated strongly with students exploring their future in business, sustainability and international trade.
Global insight with local relevance
Ian Houston added an international perspective shaped by a career spanning government relations, global development, public affairs and university partnerships in the UK and the US.
He spoke about Dundee’s ability to compete internationally by being authentic, outward-looking and collaborative. His experience reinforced how cities like Dundee can build strong global relationships while staying grounded in local strengths.
Together, Gill and Ian encouraged students to see Dundee as a place where global careers can start, grow and thrive.
Collaboration that creates opportunity
A key theme throughout the event was connection.
Progress does not happen in isolation. Partnerships between organisations such as MSIP, Dundee & Angus Chamber of Commerce and the University of Dundee help create opportunities that would not exist otherwise. Conversations like this bring people together, spark ideas and open doors.
