An MSIP Innovation Lab user is taking an important step towards making electric vehicle charging more inclusive after being selected for a leading UK accessibility innovation programme.
4SB Mobility has been chosen as one of just 16 innovators to join the National Centre for Accessible Transport (NCAT) 2026 Scaling Innovation Programme, delivered in partnership with Connected Places Catapult.
For the team behind 4SB Mobility, accessibility has always been central to the company’s mission. Their battery swapping system has been designed specifically to remove many of the barriers disabled EV users can face with public charging – from handling heavy cables to needing to leave the vehicle during the process.
Instead, the system offers a rapid battery swap experience with accessible station design, wide wheelchair access, and physical, visual and auditory support built in from the outset.
The programme will give the company the opportunity to work closely with NCAT, Transport for All and the Research Institute for Disabled Consumers (RiDC) to co-design and trial solutions directly alongside disabled EV users. This will include testing the technology using a retrofit EV people carrier and a demonstration swap station.
Speaking about the opportunity on LinkedIn, the company said it wanted accessibility to be “ingrained in our design and not bolted on further down the line” – an approach that reflects the growing importance of inclusive innovation across the transport sector.
